GORDON, John Steele. A Thread Across the Ocean: The Heroic  Story of the Transatlantic Cable. In the 1850s, doing business abroad still meant traveling there, since there was no overseas communication. Gordon tells the fascinating story of the laying of the first transatlantic cable in 1866, which was the engineering feat of the century (little was known about the ocean’s floor or about the type of cable necessary to withstand its pressures), as well as one of the most expensive business projects to that time.

Out of Time: Designs for the Twentieth-Century Future, by Norman Brosterman. Catalogue of an exhibition at Springfield, MA (10/5/02 to 12/1/02) of paintings, watercolors, drawings and other renderings of future architecture, transportation, cities, space ships and robots, as conceived by artists from 1895 to 1965.
