On the Edge of Your Seat: Popular Theater and Film in Early-20th-Century American Art. Catalogue of an exhibition of over 200 works in Montclair, NJ, 9/15/02-1/5/03. Combines history of art, theater and film, including paintings, posters, playbills, song sheets, postcards, and vintage lighting and motion picture equipment. Among the paintings are works from 1890 to 1930 by Charles Demuth, John Sloan, Edward Hopper and Robert Henri.

HALLIWELL, Leslie.  Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies. The indispensable movie buff's companion, with fingertip access to information on technical terms, prizes, the history of cinema, and all those involved with it (stars, directors, producers, composers, etc.).

LUMET, Sidney. Making Movies. Well-written account of the process of film-making by a director intent on making every aspect of a film contribute toward the theme. You'll never look at  Lumet’s Twelve Angry Men the same way again.

McKEE, Robert. Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting. The indispensable textbook for screenwriters, but also a fascinating read for movie fans, since it makes explicit the rules for putting a movie together well.
