This survey of painting and sculpture looks at the most innovative and influential art produced from 1400 to 1900, focusing on artists whose ideas changed the course of art history. In the fourth session, using for comparison works seen earlier, participants will study several works in detail (including Raphael's School of Athens). These courses are intended to help you enjoy art more, whether you are visiting a local museum, vacationing in Europe, contemplating a favorite artwork, or searching for more art to love.

Session 1: Introduction (Giotto), Italian Renaissance,
Late Gothic / Renaissance in the North

Session 2: High Renaissance, Mannerism,
16th-c. Venetians, Baroque (pt. 1)

Session 3: Baroque (pt. 2), Rococo,
Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism

Session 4: Academicism, Manet, Impressionism,
Post-Impressionism, Rodin

The survey is clearly and copiously illustrated, and meticulously devoid of academic jargon. An attendee of another course by Dr. Durante commented, “The information was presented so interestingly and concisely for someone like me, who is anything but an art expert. The fact that I remember everything so well, even now, is evidence of the effectiveness and ease of your presentation.  The next time I view sculpture, I will be looking at it with much more enjoyment and appreciation.”

Dianne Durante is a freelance writer, lecturer, and researcher living in Brooklyn, New York. She is author of Outdoor Monuments of Manhattan: A Historical Guide (2007) and Forgotten Delights: The Producers, A Selection of Manhattan’s Outdoor Sculpture (2003). The Forgotten Delights website and blog  (www.ForgottenDelights.com and www.ForgottenDelights.blogspot.com), which she created and maintains, were the first sites on the Net devoted to helping viewers understand and appreciate the hundreds of outdoor representational sculptures in New York. Her writing on sculpture and painting has also appeared in The Objective Standard, on the web, and in a high-school textbook. Dr. Durante’s habit of looking at artworks with an informed and inquisitive eye was inspired by Ayn Rand's writings on esthetics, but this course assumes no knowledge of Rand’s philosophy.
